There is a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can inspect rollers from inside the garage with the door closed: look for cracked nylon, rust, or a wheel that does not spin freely by hand. You can also lubricate the roller stem where it meets the hinge with a garage-door-specific lubricant, not WD-40, which attracts dust.

Where DIY goes wrong is replacing the roller itself. The door is under tension from the torsion springs, and the roller sits captive between the track and the hinge. Removing it requires partially detaching the hinge from the door panel while the panel is under load. A slipped wrench or a hinge bolt that lets go can send a heavy door section moving fast.
